Matt is building a Hoop House.
After a lot of discussion, and planning the construction of our Hoop House has begun.
I thought it was appropriate to put this on our recipe blog, because we will be growing our food in this small greenhouse, in addition to our gardens outside. This is a way for you to learn about how to build a hoop house.
First Matt picked a spot to put up the greenhouse. There is no level ground around the house so it was necessary to dig it out, and level the area.
This area is approximately 10' x 12'-16'. We are curving the back of the house, and hope to put a small work table in there.
Here are the four hoops that Matt reinforced together to retain their shape.
These metal pipes were measured, then cut for the posts.
Making the cuts.
Heating the pipe in this small fire helped to hammer out the ends into points, so they are easier to pound into the ground.
Then put the hot metal into a bucket of hot water to cool.
Posts are ready!
This is the top center beam of the house. The notches will line up with the four hoops and be connected with a nail. After a lot of sweat, and balancing Matt and I put up the skeleton. One hoop at a time until we got this beautiful result.
Coming up next: reinforce the hoops to the top beam with electrical tape, and wire. Then we will cover the structure with plastic. The door will be the final piece to the construction of the Hoop House. This was not easy, and was quite laborious, however the half way to the end result is fantastic!
